NEW RELEASES AND REQUESTS

I've had a couple of requests over the past week or so. Figured I'd do a quick Tuesday post to fill 'em.

First off, the links on the Fine Young Cannibals and The Beat posts that had gone bad have been fixed.

Secondly, I had a request to re-post the songs I posted during the 2008 holiday season, as nearly all of the links have since gone away. so here they are, all in one zip file. I won't go through the whole track list, but here's the artists: Billy Bragg, Syd Straw & Los Lobos, Goober & The Peas, INXS, Paul Kelly, The Pogues, Willie Nelson & Stephen Colbert, AC/DC, They Might Be Giants, Bad Manners, Madness, Dreams So Real, Chris Isaac, Bob & Doug McKenzie, Tom Waits, De La Soul, Damien Dempsey, John Wesley Harding, The Kinks, The Smithereens, Pearl Jam, Grant Lee Phillips, Everlast, The Greedies, E, Monty Python, Steve Earle, Damien Rice, The Chieftains & Elvis Costello.

If you're desperate to know the song titles, you can always go look at the original posts.

On to the new releases this week. It's still early in the year, and not too many labels want to put new albums out this time of year, so the pickin's are slim. Here's a small handful that you may want to take a look at:

The Magnetic Fields - Realism (buy) I haven't heard too much from The Magnetic Fields in recent years, but the little bit I have heard, I like, and I was a big fan of the old stuff.

Tindersticks - Falling Down a Mountain (buy) Probably the one I'm most excited about this week. Unfortunately, it's only available as an import at the moment.

Youssou N'Dour - I Bring What I Love (soundtrack) (buy) There's a reason why Youssou is the biggest name in world music.

Various Artists - NPR Discover Songs: The New Jazz Divas (buy) I've only heard a couple of these women before, but being the music nerd that I am, I tend to like quite a bit of what NPR hypes.

FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS

If you lived through the eighties, chances are pretty good you already know who the Fine Young Cannibals were. For the one in a million that comes by this way, and isn't familiar, here's the short version.

After Dave Wakeling and Raking Roger broke up The Beat to go and form General Public, Beat guitarist David Steele and bassist Andy Cox recruited singer Roland Gift and became Fine Young Cannibals. They scored several big hits like "She Drives Me Crazy" and "Good Thing". Bigger hits (in the States anyway) than they had with The Beat.

They broke up in the early nineties, after two albums, and have only re-convened once a few years later, to record a new track, "The Flame", for a best of compilation.

Here's some songs you won't find on their two albums. Some of these may be on the many compilations that have come out since their break, but I haven't really paid attention to those.

(files expired)

Fine Young Cannibals - "Wade In the Water" (traditional) B-side of their first single, "Blue".
Fine Young Cannibals - "Motherless Child" (traditional) B-side of the "Funny How Love Is" single.
Fine Young Cannibals - "Love For Sale" (Cole Porter cover) B-side of the 12" version of "Blue". A different mix of the song was later released on the charity album Red Hot + Blue.
Fine Young Cannibals - "Social Security" B-side of "Good Thing".
Fine Young Cannibals - "You Never Know" B-side of "Don't Look Back".
Fine Young Cannibals - "Pull the Sucker Off" B-side of "She Drives Me Crazy". While most of their b-sides are fantastic, this one's a fairly standard 80s throwaway track.

Some "Fine" cds to purchase:

Fine Young Cannibals, 1985 (buy)
The Raw and The Cooked, 1988 (buy)
The Raw and The Remix, 1990 (buy) (remixes. I've never been a fan of those)
The Finest, 1996 (buy) (best-of with one new track)

Yeah, it's a fairly short post today. I've been busy with work. Been a while since I've been able to say that.

THE (ENGLISH) BEAT

Here's one I shouldn't have to tell you about. The English Beat (or The Beat to pretty much everyone outside the USA) were a 2-Tone-era ska band from England.

They put out a total of three albums during their career. The first two had several hits in the UK, and other countries, but didn't do well in the States. The third album, Special Beat Service, however, changed that thanks to a lengthy tour of the States, and a descent amount of radio play.

Having finally made it big on both sides of the pond, they promptly broke up. The band's main singer, Dave Wakeling, didn't want to split the touring money between such a large group, so he decided to start a new smaller group, and he convinced the other singer, Ranking Roger to go with him. Together they formed General Public, and had a few more hits.

The two guitarists, Andy Cox and David Steel, went on to form Fine Young Cannibals, and score several hits. The rest of the band did time in several other ska bands, notably The International Beat and The Special Beat.

Though their have been reunion shows in more recent years, the entire original line up has never been on stage again.

Some of these "rarities" have been issued on the many best-of compilations that have been released since the demise of the band. However, to quote Bruce McCulloch, Best-of's are for housewives and little girls. So, if the songs aren't available on the regular albums, I still think of them as non-album tracks.
