A story you all know, but I’ll give a short version anyway.
Jeff Buckley was the son of musician Tim Buckley, though they rarely saw each other, and Tim died from an overdose while Jeff was still very young.
Years later, Jeff’s music career would take off with the release of his album, Grace. Though he had recorded with other groups and put out an ep (live at Sin-e) prior to the album, but none had met with any large success. Though, truthfully, the album wasn’t a big commercial success at the time, but it was critically very well received at the time.
After ages touring for Grace, he settled down and recorded a follow up, titled My Sweetheart, The Drunk. Not satisfied with the results, he flew down to Memphis to record a new version. While waiting for his band to arrive, he took a quick swim in the Wolf River, and drowned.
Much of his music has been released posthumously, including the demos for his last album, earlier work with Gary Lucas, and many many live shows.
Here I give you several of his lesser heard (though easy to find on the net) radio sessions:
(all files expired)
Jeff Buckley - “Bluebird Blues” Date and location of the recording are unknown to me.
Jeff Buckley - “I Against I” (Bad Brains cover) Recorded for KCRW, January 1994.
Jeff Buckley - “Curtains” (Elton John cover) Recorded for WFMU, October 11, 1992.
Jeff Buckley - “Lover, You Should Have Come Over” Recorded for On Air Azabu. Released as a b-side of “Eternal Life”. Original version is on Grace.
Jeff Buckley - “Last Goodbye” Recorded for On Air Azabu. Released as a b-side of “Eternal Life”. Original version is on Grace.
Jeff Buckley - We All Fall In Love Sometimes” (Elton John cover) Recorded for WFMU, October 11, 1992.
Jeff Buckley - “Please Send Me Someone To Love” (Percy Mayfield cover) Another song recorded for WFMU on October 11, 1992.
Jeff Buckley - “I Shall Be Released” (Bob Dylan cover) Jeff’s vocals recorded live via phone for WFMU, September 6, 1992. I was unaware until writing this that it was officially released last year on the album For New Orleans. Probably better sound quality on that, this one’s from a bootleg.
Jeff Buckley - “Farewell Angelina” (Bob Dylan cover) Yet another WFMU session. This one’s from 1993. The sound quality isn’t great, though.
A couple of bonuses:
Jeff Buckley - “Three Is the Magic Number” (Schoolhouse Rock cover) Bootleg recording from The Mercury Lounge, December 31, 1995.
Jeff Buckley - “Ulalume” (Edgar Allen Poe) Jeff reading Poe’s story over some minimal music. From the tribute album Closed On Account of Rabies.
