MIDNIGHT OIL

Consider this a congratulatory post. Peter Garrett, former lead singer of the Australian band Midnight Oil, was recently named Minister for Environment in the Australian government. Those who are familiar with Midnight Oil, beyond the mega hit “Beds Are Burning”, know that Peter has long been an environmental advocate. We here at the Pile of Vinyl offer our congratulations.

Let’s hope Peter retains both the power and the passion. (ouch, that’s a groaner)

In celebration, here’s a few old Midnight Oil tunes not featured on there many fine albums.

(all files expired)

Midnight Oil - “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love and Understanding” (live Nick Lowe / Elvis Costello cover) I’ve heard they released a studio version of this as a b-side to “Put Down That Weapon”, unfortunately this is the best I could find. Other than a minor slip up on the lyrics, it’s a fine performance, though.
Midnight Oil - “We Gotta Get Out of This Place” (live Animals cover) Recording during their Mtv Unplugged show, but not aired.
Midnight Oil - “Smash the Wobbleboard” B-side of the “Underwater” single.
Midnight Oil - “The Good Son” (live Nick Cave cover) Midnight Oil singing Nick Cave. Can it get any better?
Midnight Oil - “Heaven and Earth” B-side of “Cemetery in My Mind” single.
Midnight Oil - “Pub With No Beer” (Slim Dusty cover) Released on a tribute album.

Thanks for these!

WSFBPL&U was actually written by Nick Lowe, back in the Brinsley Swartz days.

-Ron, had it on vinyl, 'til my brother swiped it.

Yeah, Peace Love & Understanding was originally released as Nick Lowe & His Sound, but since Elvis did the vocals, it's on all his best-of's, and he performs it at most of his shows, I tend to think of it as a Costello song. But I should give credit where it's due.

Just came across this site while looking for some of these rare songs. Any chance you can put them back online or did the industry folks put a stop to these particular tracks?

Peace,
Chris

Most of the stuff I post disappears after a while. But when asked for a repost, I'm happy to oblige. Give me a couple days, and I'll put them back up.

Thanks so much! Trying to find some of these songs via singles was quite the challenge (both in finding the right single release from a particular country and in the wallet) and I'd had minimal luck with some of the bootlegs out there.

Peace,
Chris
